Carbon Fiber CNC Machining Guide
A production workflow for turning carbon fiber laminate drawings into controlled, inspectable CNC-machined parts.

Drawing and Material Review
Start by identifying revision, units, material specification, laminate thickness, cosmetic faces, critical dimensions and the function of each interface. Resolve conflicts between CAD geometry and the drawing before programming.
Confirm that stock flatness, thickness variation and laminate construction are compatible with the tolerances. A material designation such as 'carbon fiber sheet' is not sufficient for a controlled structural part.
Process Planning and First Article
Plan nesting, datum strategy, workholding, drilling order, contour direction and tabs or sacrificial support. The sequence should protect visible surfaces and prevent small features from moving as the surrounding material is removed.
A first article verifies program logic, dimensions, edge quality and assembly interfaces. Feedback should be captured before releasing the remaining batch, particularly when the geometry or laminate is new.
Tool Life and Process Control
Abrasive fibers cause progressive tool wear that can increase cutting force, heat and breakout. Define replacement criteria using part quality, cutting distance or monitored process behavior rather than waiting for obvious failure.
Controlled dust extraction, machine cleaning and separation from sensitive electrical equipment support both safety and repeatability. Work instructions should identify validated tools and parameters for the material family.
Inspection and Traceability
Inspection should follow drawing priorities. Check critical hole patterns, profiles, thickness, flatness where specified, countersinks and interface dimensions with methods appropriate to the laminate and tolerance.
Record material batch or lot information when required, along with drawing revision, first-article approval and nonconformance disposition. Protect clean edges and cosmetic faces during handling and packaging.
