Typical Sheet and Plate Applications
CFRP sheet is used for structural panels, equipment frames, robot and UAV plates, brackets, covers, instrument components, fixtures and lightweight machine elements. Flat stock is especially useful when geometry can be produced by 2D CNC machining.
Applications range from cosmetic covers to load-carrying plates. The same visible weave does not make them interchangeable; structural parts need a laminate and thickness matched to their loads and interfaces.
Panel and Load-Path Design
A flat sheet works efficiently in in-plane tension, while bending performance depends strongly on thickness, span and support. Flanges, folded assemblies, bonded ribs or sandwich construction can increase section stiffness.
Holes and cutouts interrupt fibers and create local stresses. Arrange features around load paths, use appropriate edge distance and distribute concentrated fastener loads with suitable joint details.
Machining, Joining and Finishing
Sheets can be routed, drilled and countersunk with composite-appropriate tools, stable support and dust extraction. Edge quality, exposed fibers and cosmetic faces should be addressed in the drawing and inspection plan.
Assemblies may use adhesive bonding, mechanical fasteners or both. Surface preparation, clamp pressure, inserts, isolation from dissimilar metals and edge sealing depend on the environment and joint function.
Selecting Stock Sheet or a Custom Laminate
Stock sheet suits prototypes, brackets and panels when available thickness, layup and surface meet the requirement. It supports short lead times and efficient nesting of multiple flat parts.
Choose a custom laminate when directional stiffness, unusual thickness, embedded features, controlled surfaces or documented construction is important. Validation should represent the production material and machined geometry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can carbon fiber sheet be bent after curing?
Cured laminate is not normally bent like sheet metal without risk of damage. Curved parts are usually laminated or molded to shape, or assembled from designed flat components.
Is sheet suitable for threaded holes?
Direct threads in laminate are generally limited for repeated or high loads. A through-fastener, bonded insert or other load-spreading feature is often more reliable.
