STEP vs DXF vs DWG
How STEP, DXF and DWG files serve different 3D and 2D manufacturing workflows, and what to send with each.

STEP for Neutral 3D Geometry
STEP is an ISO 10303 product-data exchange format widely used to transfer solid and assembly geometry between CAD, CAM and inspection systems. It is suitable when a supplier needs the complete 3D form of a part.
A STEP model may not communicate every manufacturing requirement. Pair it with a controlled drawing for tolerances, material, finish, critical features and revision notes.
DXF for 2D Profiles and Drawings
DXF is commonly used to exchange 2D vectors for cutting, routing and drawing workflows. It works well for flat sheet profiles when the file contains clean, closed contours at the correct scale.
Remove duplicate lines, construction geometry and unintended layers. Identify units, thickness, quantity and which contours are internal or external rather than relying only on a filename.
DWG for Native Drawing Workflows
DWG is a native drawing database used by many drafting systems and can contain layouts, layers, blocks, annotations and model geometry. Compatibility depends on the software version and how the file was created.
For manufacturing handoff, a PDF can preserve the intended visual drawing while DXF or STEP supplies usable geometry. Confirm that all exported files show the same revision.
Which Format Should You Send?
Send STEP for 3D components, DXF for controlled 2D cutting profiles and DWG when editable drawing data is specifically requested. For flat CFRP parts with detailed requirements, DXF plus PDF is often clear; for shaped parts, STEP plus PDF is stronger.
File format does not replace content quality. Units, revision, material, thickness, tolerances and acceptance criteria must remain consistent across the package.

Can a PDF replace CAD geometry?
A PDF is excellent for notes and controlled dimensions but may not provide precise programmable geometry. Send it with the appropriate neutral or vector file.
What if CAD and drawing disagree?
Manufacturing should pause until the discrepancy is resolved and a single approved revision is issued. Never assume which source is correct.
